Châteauneuf-du-Pape has gone from being a restaurant understudy 20 years ago, (for the inevitably cast claret), into a legendary wine in its own right, cellared by people in the know, and gracing the very best tables.
No doubt Mr. Robert Parker has helped influence the shift, Châteauneuf being one of his great loves. That, and the simply MINDBLOWING top wines based around ancient gnarled Grenache vines, blended with up to 12 other grapes.
We will taste and drink several distinct styles with dinner, some being poured from magnum:
The great traditionalist Henri Bonneau
of Celestins (up to 100 points)
& Marie Beurrier fame
Legendary Château de Beaucastel
of famille Perrin
Top newcomer Stanislas Wallut
of Domaine de Villeneuve
Top contemporary Rhône negociant
Michel Tardieu
Cult classic Clos des Papes
of famille Avril
The eponymous Domaine Charvin
We will start with a spot of rare white Châteauneuf, and also include a very profound wine from the most complex ancient Grenache vineyard in the world, from just outwith Châteauneuf itself.
The wines will be introduced by David Harvey, wine merchant and columnist with The World of Fine Wine finewinemag.com. As ever, do Google anything contained here within, before deciding for yourselves, as you may, that an extraordinary, not to be missed night is in the offing...
The evening will start at 7pm with an apéritif and canapés, followed by the tasting and dinner at 7.30pm. Tickets for this very exclusive event are £140: to include a champagne reception, the dinner menu and all of the wines. This is amazing value for money given the quality of wines that will be served. Please note that there will be a limit on the number of available tickets.
