One of the greatest sweet white wines in the world, Tokaji is the pride of Hungary. In 1700, long before Portugal’s Douro Valley became a protected wine region for Port in 1756 and a similar classification for Bordeaux was introduced in the nineteenth century, a classification system according to the terroir was established for the vineyards in Hungary’s Tokaj-Hegyalja wine district producing the distinctive and luscious wine that is Tokaji. Today, the Royal Tokaji Wine Company, co-founded by world-renowned wine expert Hugh Johnson, produces a fine range of wines. |
