A very simple fresh and modern room and mezzanine bedroom. The room is dominated by the free form of the red Koochy sofa which immediately makes it feel very comfortable. The Paola Navone Ghost chair and armchair with their loose white covers give the room an easy feel. When the angular formality of the Quadrant table and the Nihau chairs make you feel that this is a place to get down to work and have decisive business meetings. The place is lit by Ingo Maurer’s desk lamps and the charming Zettel pendant lamp. The mezzanine bedroom and bathroom clad in carrara marble are comfortable and very relaxing. Just the place to be after a hard day’s work in the main room below.

Terence Conran on the Modern Dickensian suite by Polly Dickens

Polly wanted to reflect some of the great spirit of her Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Charles Dickens who had a rather jaundiced view of Shoreditch being a very down and out, very impoverished rough place in his time – filled with poverty and squalour. How the world constantly changes.

She chose the Burnt wood furniture of the Dutch designer Maarten Baas to reflect this mood and also the Conran Shop classic black leather Chesterfield sofa and a beautiful antique Turkish patchwork rug. A picture by Hector de Gregorio ‘Sword & A Snake’ of a girl with a sword and a snake perfectly fits this Dickensian reconstruction.

Thankfully the mezzanine bedroom is altogether more peaceful with a really fine bathroom done in black and white triangular tiles – very elegant.

Sir David Tang is the well known Hong Kong entrepreneur who started Shanghai Tang and runs the fabulous China Clubs in Hong Kong and Beijing. His luxurious suite is furnished with many beautiful pieces that he has acquired in China and is lined with an exquisite Chinese silk wallpaper. The attention to detail and rarity of the furnishings in the living and bedrooms and bathroom make this a very special place to stay and to entertain.

Suite details: 61.5sqm, double width, terrace, bath & shower, smoking.

Terence Conran on the Beach suite by Vicki Conran

Unlike many of the rooms, this low concept room has no design pedigree; it has, I hope, a rather informal, relaxed appeal. I thought a whimsical touch of the seashore would be a quirky counterpoint to the urban grittiness that is Shoreditch. With a palette of blues and chalky whites, together with Lloyd Loom, sea grass, canvas and cotton, the room has an airiness that maximizes the lofty double height aspect.

The framed prints in the bathroom are from a rather racy French magazine, La Vie Parisienne, wistful reminders of stolen moments on the beach at Deauville and Le Touquet. Upstairs the comfortable bed is covered with an antique white cotton appliqué quilt. On the wall is a serene still life, a wave breaking on a sandy beach by Dawn Reader “I aim to capture a poignant moment, a distant memory, a sense of peace and freedom in the seascapes I paint” is what she says of her work.

Suite details: 43.5sqm, duplex, terrace, bath & shower.

I wanted to make this a simple and comfortable room and I very much like the double height space and the windows and narrow balcony. I chose my favourite chair in the world, the Karouselli designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro and designed a simple cream leather sofa to go with it. The sideboard again is specially designed as are all the sideboards in the hotel and made by Benchmark as are the built in wardrobes, each one reflects the designs of the room.

The bedroom on the upper level overlooks the double height space and is decorated by a driftwood branch covered with pretty coloured paper butterflies which have settled on it.

Fine cotton bed linen and a grey velvet comforter together with the hugely comfortable Savoir bed makes this a place that should ensure a really good night’s sleep especially after an excellent dinner in the Boundary restaurant and a cigar and Vieille Prune on the Rooftop.

Nip down to the simple bathroom and have a nice soak in the white bath and a shave in the well lit mirrored basin with plenty of room for your sponge bags and other gear. Nice big white bath sheets and dressing gowns.
